With the release of the new Florida Sunshine State
Standards in Science (2008) Florida Science Olympiad will correlate all
events with these new standards. Events have been correlated
to those state standards which are explicitly used, or are a required
prerequisite to perform the event at a minimum level to demonstrate more
in-depth learning and so that the student can achieve success in the
event. Each year, approximately 50% of the events
undergo a major revision or are replaced. As each event is
rewritten or replaced, Science Olympiad consults the National Science
Education Standards to ensure that all events are correlated at a
national level. In addition, the National Science Education
Standards (National Research Council, 1996) specifically sited Science
Olympiad as an excellent example of how inquiry and assessment can be
effectively connected to improve student learning.
