  • Official Events:  Teams will receive the rules manual after registering.
    • Barge Building - The purpose of this event is to construct a barge using aluminum foil that can support a cargo of the largest number of objects without getting them wet.
    • Camp Rock - Teams will prepare charts, identify various rocks and minerals, and describe their characteristics.
    • Chopper Challenge - Contestants will build and test 3 choppers (rotary flying devices) using only the materials provided at the competition.
    • Don't Bug Me - The teams are to identify insects, the various stages of insect development, and which insects are native to Florida.
    • Energy Lab - The objective is to build a solar powered car that can move the farthest using the light from a flood lamp.  This is a PREBUILT EVENT.  This is a Trial Event. Trial events are optional and do not count towards the overall score. Students will receive awards for the events.
    • Estimania - Students will be asked to estimate the number of objects in containers containing between 10 and 1,000,000 objects by measuring smaller samples of the objects.
    • Grab A Gram - Teams will cooperate to pick up fifty (50) grams of up to 8 different sets of material. There will be eight trials using different substances (preferably different densities) in each round.
    • Gunk Challenge - Teams will make "gunk" with various characteristics that will be tested at the competition.
    • Mystery Powders - A team of two contestants will be asked to identify a mixture of common white household powders. Score Sheet
    • Naked Egg Drop -The objective is to have a two-person team construct a package to protect a “naked” egg that will be dropped free fall from a high spot selected by the tournament director.  This is a PREBUILT EVENT
    • Picture This - The objective is to have a team member draw a representation of a particular scientific term or concept for team members who must guess the term while watching it being drawn.  All terms will come from the Earth Space Science definitions on the State of Florida Item Specification Book and related DOE preparation manuals.
    • Practically Science - Teams will rotate to various stations in which they will be required to collect data using various scientific measuring tools.  They will be required to use the tool in the correct manner and/or select the most appropriate tool to measure the task or object presented. CLARIFICATIONS

Event Name Clarification
Barge Building Students will get a random assortment.
BioMass A radish seed must be used, not a bean.  A 10% penalty will only be taken off if station left unclean.  Score=Biomass+interview+journal score-10% penalty.  8h. Should state "Explain the role of evolution in the development of plants."
Energy Lab A 90watt Halogen Lightbulb will be used.
Naked Egg Drop Students will get one egg for each drop.
